Origen de la canción
Dorothy Lamour interpretó “It Could Happen to You” en el film musical titulado And the Angels Sing (Diablillos con faldas) producido por Paramount Pictures y dirigido por George Marshall. La película, que se estrenó en Nueva York el 25 de abril de 1944, contaba la historia de cuatro hermanas cantantes y bailarinas (Lamour, Betty Hutton, Diana Lynn y Mimi Chandler), y su relación con un director de orquesta (Fred MacMurray).
Jimmy Van Heusen fue uno de los compositores favoritos de Bing Crosby y de Frank Sinatra, los cuales grabaron más de setenta melodías suyas. Estuvo nominado para el Oscar a la mejor canción catorce veces en doce años diferentes (en 1945 y 1964 fue nominado por dos canciones), y lo ganó en cuatro ocasiones, con "Swinging on a Star" (1944), "All the Way" (1957), “High Hopes" (1959) y "Call Me Irresponsible" (1963). Johnny Burke escribió la letra de más de cuatrocientas canciones y colaboró en cuarenta y dos peliculas. Es autor, entre otras, de “Pennies from Heaven” (1936), “What’s New” (1939), “Imagination” (1939), “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” (1940), “Moonlight Becomes You” (1942), “Like Someone In Love” (1944), “Swinging on a Star” (1944), -por la que ganó un premio Oscar- “But Beautiful” (1947), “Here’s That Rainy Day” (1953) y “Misty” (1954).
La primera grabación de “It Could Happen to You” la realizó Jo Stafford, acompañada por la orquesta de Paul Weston (3 de diciembre de 1943) para el sello Capitol.
