Origen de la canción
La revista musical Lew Leslie's Blackbirds of 1930 se estrenó el 22 de octubre de ese año en el Royale Theatre de Nueva York. Sus autores eran Flournoy Miller (libreto), Eubie Blake (música) y Andy Razaf (letras). El actor y cantante Minto Cato interpretó “Memories of You” en dicha función. En el reparto del espectáculo figuraba así mismo Ethel Waters. De la obra sólo se dieron cincuenta y siete representaciones.
“Memories of You” fue la única colaboración de Blake y Razaf. El primero escribió también "Charleston Rag" (1899), "Love Will Find A Way" (1921), "I'm Just Wild About Harry" (1921) y "Bandana Days" (1922). Por su parte, Andy Razaf tuvo una larga y brillante carrera de letrista, con éxitos como “Honeysuckle Rose” (1929), “Black and Blue (What Did I Do to Be So Black and Blue)” (1929), “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (1929), “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now” (1932) y “The Joint is Jumpin’” (1940), todos ellos con Fats Waller. También colaboró con Benny Goodman, Edgar Sampson y Chick Webb en “Stompin’ at the Savoy” (1936), y con Joseph C. Garland en “In the Mood” (1939).
