Origen de la canción

Judy Garland interpretó "Over the Rainbow" en la película The Wizard of Oz (El mago de Oz). El film se estrenó el 15 de agosto de 1939 en Hollywood, y dos días después, en Nueva York. La canción obtuvo inmediatamente un enorme éxito: en menos de un mes, cuatro versiones entraron en las listas de popularidad y una de ellas, la de la orquesta de Glenn Miller, con el cantante Ray Eberle, permaneció en el número uno durante siete semanas.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer había elegido a Jerome Kern para la banda sonora del film, pero el compositor rechazó la oferta, pues su médico le habÍa prescrito reposo absoluto para que se recuperase de un reciente ataque cardíaco. La productora también tuvo que conformarse con la segunda opción para la estrella de la película, y aceptó a Garland sólo después de no haber podido conseguir que 20th Century Fox le prestase a Shirley Temple. Tras varios cambios en el guión (en el que intervinieron más de una docena de escritores) y en el reparto, la película se terminó en marzo de 1939. El director oficial fue Victor Fleming, pero colaboraron en el trabajo Mervyn LeRoy y King Vidor. El film recibió seis nominaciones al Oscar y ganó el premio a la Mejor Banda Sonora Original (debida a Herbert Stothart) y a la Mejor Canción, “Over the Rainbow”.
