Origen de la canción

El musical Roberta se estrenó el 18 de noviembre de 1933 en el New Amsterdam Theatre de Nueva York. A pesar de las críticas negativas, alcanzó doscientas noventa y cinco representaciones. Esta duración en la cartelera se debió, en parte, al atractivo de las canciones de Kern y Harbach, entre las cuales, además de "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", estaban "I'll Be Hard to Handle", "Yesterdays" y "Let’s Begin". Otro de sus puntos fuertes era un reparto estelar que incluía a Fay Templeton, Lyda Roberti, Sydney Greenstreet, George Murphy, Bob Hope y Fred MacMurray. Tamara interpretó "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" la noche del estreno, canción que se convirtió inmediatamente en un éxito.

Al poco tiempo de acabar las representaciones en Broadway, el musical se llevó a la pantalla. La película, Roberta (Roberta, 1935), producida por RKO Radio Pictures, dirigida por William A. Seiter y protagonizada por Irene Dunne, Randolph Scott, Fred Astaire y Ginger Rogers, fue muy bien recibida por el público, tanto por la perfección de la partitura como por los brillantes números de baile de Astaire y Rogers. Irenne Dunne cantó "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" en el film. Una nueva versión de la obra, titulada Lovely To Look At (El amor nació en Paris, 1952), no corrió la misma suerte.
