Music: Jerome Kern- Lyrics: Oscar Hammerstein II
Year: 1939
On 17 November 1939 Very Warm for May premiered in the Alvin Theatre of Broadway. The music was composed by Jerome Kern and the libretto and the lyrics of the songs by Oscar Hammerstein II. The play was directed by Vincente Minelli, who was also the author of the stage scenery and costumes. Among the many actors, there was June Allyson, Eve Arden, and Vera Ellen. In the first act, Hiram Sherman, Frances Mercer, Hollace Shaw, and Ralph Stuart sang ‘All The Things You Are’, and in the second act, it was performed by Matty Malneck’s orchestra and sung by Ray Mayer.
The following night, the hall was almost empty due to the highly unfavourable reviews that the play had received, which only this song could escape from. After only fifty nine performances, the show was withdrawn from the hoarding.
Before his collaboration in Very Warm for May, Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II had written other four musicals: Sunny (1925), Show Boat (1927), Sweet Adeline (1929), and Music in the Air (1932).
