COME RAIN OR COME SHINE

Music: Harold Arlen- Lyrics: Johnny Mercer

Year: 1946

Origin of the song

The musical St. Louis Woman started having problems before its premiere. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People sued the show for having ‘characters that undermine the dignity of our race’. The leading star, Lena Horne, left the project, claiming that the play made black people go back a hundred years in time. Furthermore, the co-librettist died and some members of the cast were fired. Finally, it was released on 30 March 1946 in the Martin Beck Theatre of New York, but it wasn’t very successful and there were only a hundred and thirteen performances.

Ruby Hill and Harold Nicholas sang ‘Come Rain Or Come Shine’ –last scene of the first act– the night of the premiere.

Nonetheless, Arlen and Mercier’s score was excellent quality and Pearl Bailey, in her first performance in Broadway, sang ‘Legalize My Name’ and ‘It’s A Woman’s Prerogative’. Due to his performance, she won the Donaldson prize as year’s best Broadway newcomer. Other songs included in the musical were ‘Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home’, ‘Ridin’ On The Moon’, ‘And I Had Myself A True Love’, and, of course, ‘Come Rain Or Come Shine’.
