GONE WITH THE WIND

Music: Allie Wrubel– Lyrics: Herb Magidson

Year: 1937

Origin of the song

Margaret Mitchell published the novel Gone with the Wind on 30 June 1936. Little time later, the compositor Allie Wrubel and the songwriter Herb Magidson composed a song with this same title.

Wrubel and Magidson had written together in 1933 ‘The Sweetheart Song’ and, the following year, ‘Lullaby in Blue’. In 1937, they did it again with their greatest hit, ‘Gone with the Wind’. In 1938, their songs ‘Musica, Maestro, Please’ and ‘I’m Afraid the Masquerade Is Over’ did well again. Their last collaboration was in 1945 with ‘I’ll Buy That Dream’.

Herb Magidson wrote the lyrics of ‘The Continental’ for the film The Gay Divorcee (1934), the first song to win the Academy Award.

Allie Wrubel composed the music of the song ‘Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah’ for the film Song of the South (1946), which also won the Oscar for best song.
