Music: Jimmy McHugh- Lyrics: Clarence Gaskill
Year: 1926
The singer Cliff Edwards, known as ‘Ukulele Ike’, recorded ‘I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me’ for the Perfect label in January of 1927. The disc didn’t enter the top charts but, in July of the same year, the version of Roger Wolfe Kahn’s orchestra did, and reached the eleventh position.
Clarence Gaskill’s work activity was fairly limited but original. He only composed the music for two Broadway shows, Earl Carroll’s Vanities (1925) and Keep It Clean (1929), and none of them was very successful. He also wrote the lyrics of some songs with such odd titles as ‘No Squat, No Stoop, No Squint’, ‘The Tin Can Song’, or ‘In the Vallée of Lombardo’ (a word game using the singer Rudy Vallée and the orchestra conductor Guy Lombardo’s names). Furthermore, he wrote which must doubtlessly be one of the most surrealist recordings of Louis Armstrong, entitled ‘Laughin’ Louis’ (1933).
Gaskill collaborated with Jimmy McHugh only twice, both in 1926: ‘I Don’t Mind Being All Alone’ and ‘I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me’, which was his greatest hit. He also wrote two songs that were popular in the top charts: the lyrics of ‘Minnie the Moocher’ (1931) and the music of ‘Prisoner of Love’ (1933), in collaboration with the singer Russ Colombo.
