Music and lyrics: Cole Porter
Year: 1934
Cole Porter wrote ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’ in 1931 for the Broadway musical Star Dust, which never got to be produced.
Some years later, he included the song in another musical called Anything Goes, which was released on 21 November 1934 in the Alvin Theatre of New York. The libretto was based on a Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse’s play, revised by Howard Linsay and Russell Crouse. The music and the lyrics were Cole Porter’s, the stage management director was Howard Lindsay, the choreographer, Robert Alton, and the main artists, William Gaxton, Ethel Merman, and Victor Moore. In the first act, Gaxton and Merman sang ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’. Other songs included in the musical were ‘Anything Goes’, ‘You’re the Top’, and ‘All Through the Night’.
The musical was very successful among the audience and the critics and it has four hundred and twenty performances. Right after being withdrawn from the theatres, Paramount Pictures produces a cinema version, Anything Goes (1936), directed by Lewis Milestone and starring Bing Crosby, Ethel Merman, Charles Ruggles, and Ida Lupino. And, twenty years later, a new version under the same title, directed by Robert Lewis with Crosby, Donald O’Connor, Zizi Jeanmaire and Mitzi Gaynor, that wasn’t released in Spain.
