Music: George Bassman - Lyrics: Ned Washington
Year: 1932
When Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey formed their own orchestra, they needed a theme song, a melody to present the band in the radio, and they chose ‘I’m getting Sentimental Over You’.
Dorsey Brothers’ orchestra recorded this song for the Columbia label on 24 September 1932, with the singer Jean Bowes, and for Decca on 15 August 1934, with the voice of Bob Crosby, Bing’s brother. This second recording was the one to enter the top charts, where it remained just for a week in the twentieth position.
George Bassman was a very prolific compositor. Actually, ‘I’m Getting Sentimental Over You’ is his best known song. During the 30s and the 40s, he worked in cinema in Hollywood as soundtrack arranger and orchestrator in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and RKO Radio Pictures. His career was suddenly blocked when he was accused before the House Un-American Activities Committee of having belonged to the Communist Party, something untrue. He died in Los Angeles in 1997, alone and forgotten by his colleagues.
