Origin of the song

‘I Surrender, Dear’ was the first hit of Bing Crosby alone. The Rhythm Boys, a famous trio that he formed, Harry Barris and Al Rinker, work with Paul Whiteman’s orchestra from December 1926 to May 1930. In 1930 Crosby was arrested for driving drunk, so Whiteman terminated the contract with him. The group joined then Gus Arnheim’s orchestra, which Crosby recorded ‘I Surrender, Dear’ with on 19 January 1931.

The song quickly rose to the third position in the top charts and Crosby signed a substantial contract with the CBS to do his first radio programme. Also that year, Max Sennett hired him to film a musical short film precisely called I Surrender, Dear. As the film has a good reception among the public, he took part in more two rolls films.

Crosby’s success alone led to The Rhythm Boys dissolution at the end of 1931. This fact gave Harry Barris freedom to carry on with his career as a pianist, band leader, compositor, and even supporting actor in a few films. Other songs that he composed are: ‘Mississippi Mud’ (1927), ‘It Must Be True’ (1930), ‘Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams’ (1931), and ‘Naturally’ (1938).
