Music: Duke Ellington- Lyrics: Irving Mills, Manny Kurtz
Year: 1935
Duke Ellington’s orchestra made the first recording of ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ on 30 April 1935 for the Brunswick label, with a stellar performance of the alto saxophonist Otto Hardwick. The disc had moderate success: it remained in the top charts for three weeks and reached the fourteenth position.
Although he did not have the credits for co-author of ‘In a Sentimental Mood’, Hardwick took part significantly in its composition. The basic ideas of almost all of Ellington’s best known songs appeared in other people’s head. For instance, ‘In a Sentimental Mood’, ‘Sophisticated Lady’, and ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ were arrangements in melodies created by Otto Hardwick. He was part of Ellington’s orchestra from 1919 until 1946. It is said that he left the band due to Duke’s distaste for his girlfriend. Little after, he left the world of music.
In a splendorous era for the radio, ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ was elected to be the tune of, at least, nine programmes.
