Music: Richard Rodgers- Lyrics: Lorenz Hart
Year: 1935
Donald Novis and Gloria Grafton sang ‘My Romance’ in the musical Jumbo. The show, based on a script by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur and starring Jimmy Durante, was released on 16 November 1935 in the huge Hippodrome Theatre of 44 Street of New York.
In spite of the good critics it received, it was performed only thirty two times, so only half of the money invested on the production was covered. The score of Rodgers and Hart included the songs ‘Little Girl Blue’, ‘Why Can’t I?’, ‘The Most Beautiful Girl in the World’, ‘The Circus Is on Parade’, ‘Over and Over Again’ and ‘My Romance’.
Paul Whiteman, director of the theatre show’s orchestra, recorded the theme for the label Victor and it was the only version hitting the charts, where it only remained one week in the 18th position.
‘My Romance’ also appeared on the film Billy Rose’s Jumbo, performed by Doris Day. The film, released on 6 December 1962 in New York, was a personal project of Doris Day and Martin Meicher, her husband. Despite the luxurious production and counting with the participation of Stephen Boyd, Martha Raye, Dean Jagger and Jimmy Durante, in addition to Doris Day, the film was neither a critic nor a box office success.
