Music: Johnny Green- Lyrics: Edward Heyman
Year: 1931
Bing Crosby recorded this song for the label Brunswick on 30 March 1931 in Los Angeles, California. A month later, the recording hit the popularity charts and on May 16 reached first place, in which it remained three weeks. It was his first number one hit as a solo artist.
The melody of ‘Out of Nowhere’ was included in the score of the film Dude Ranch, produced by Paramount Picture, directed by Frank Tuttle and starring Jack Oakie, Stuart Erwin, Eugene Pallette and Mitzi Green, which was premiered on 16 May 1931 in the US.
The compositor, orchestra director and arranger Johnny Green was the musical director of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer between 1949 and 1959. He is the author, among other songs, of 'Coquette' (1928), 'Body and Soul' (1930), 'I’m Yours' (1930), 'I Wanna Be Loved' (1932), and 'I Cover the Waterfront' (1933). He won the Oscar for best score four times: Easter Parade (1949), An American in Paris (1951), West Side Story (1961) together with Saul Chaplin, Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal, and Oliver! (Oliver, 1968). As a composer, Nathaniel Shilkret and Paul Whiteman asked him to write big orchestra works such as ‘Night Club (Six Impressions for Orchestra with Three Pianos)’, which Whiteman released on 25 January 1933 in the Carnegie Hall of New York.
