Music: Benny Goodman, Edgar Sampson, Chick Webb- Lyrics: Andy Razaf
Year: 1934
In 1933, saxophonist Edgar Sampson joined Chick Webb's orchestra. He had been performing professionally for several years and competed with the big bands, such as Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson. Sampson was not only a performer but also a composer and arranger. Other popular songs include 'If Dreams Come True' (1934), 'Blue Lou' (1935), 'Don't Be That Way' (1938) and 'Lullaby in Rhythm' (1938).
The title 'Stompin' at the Savoy' refers to the Savoy Ballroom Club in the Harlem neighbourhood of New York, which opened its doors in 1926. Its huge dance floor, almost a thousand square metres in size, soon attracted the best dancers in the city. In 1927, the Savoy began sponsoring jazz band contests. Chick Webb's took part in the first of these sessions, called 'The Battles of Jazz'. Years later, Chick Webb's orchestra would headline the Savoy Ballroom and for his triumphs over the bands of Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson and Benny Goodman, based on audience votes, he was crowned 'The King of the Savoy'.
The Savoy Ballroom was demolished in 1958 to build a housing block. On the site, there is a commemorative plaque whose text recalls the history and meaning of the club, a model of racial and cultural integration.
