Music: Victor Young- Lyrics: Will J. Harris
Year: 1928
As 'Sweet Sue, Just You' doesn't belong to any Broadway show or movie, it's a little difficult to determine when it actually premiered. The first recording of the song of which I am aware corresponds to Charlie Straight Orchestra, with the voice of Frank Sylvano, which took place on 17 March 1928 (Brunswick 3900 A). At that time, Victor Young was part of the Ted Fio Rito orchestra in Chicago and also worked 'freelance' in other local bands. Young had also been a member of Ben Pollack's orchestra, which recorded the song in April 1928, probably through an agreement with the young composer.
The silent movie star Sue Carol appears on the cover of the original score of the song. Some sources claim that it was written for her, although it is most likely that it was simply propaganda for her film career, which began in 1927 and ended ten years later. However, she was born in Chicago, which can establish a connection with Victor Young and Will J. Harris, who worked in that city when they composed the song.
In 1942, Sue Carol married actor Alan Ladd and became his agent.
