Music: George Gershwin- Lyrics: Ira Gershwin
Year: 1924
The song ‘The Man I Love’ was removed from the musical Lady, Be Good! (1924) before it was even released. Later, it was included in Strike Up the Band (1927), which failed to be performed in New York. Then, it was programmed for Rosalie (1928), a great team work by Sigmund Romberg, the Gershwin and P.G. Wodehouse. But then again, the song was removed before de premiere of the show. On its own it was wonderful, but it didn’t fit in inside any structure of any musical. In spite of all these setbacks, this piece became popular in London and Paris thanks to Lady Mountbatten, a friend of Gershwin’s, who had come back to Europe with a copy of the score. In the US, the first recording was made by Marion Harris on 8 December 1927 for the Victor label.
Other George and Ira Gershwin’s collaborations that stand out are: ’Oh, Lady Be Good!’ (1924), ‘Fascinating Rhythm’ (1924), ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ (1926), ‘Maybe’ (1926), ‘'S Wonderful!’ (1927), ‘How Long Has This Been Going On?’ (1927), ‘Strike Up the Band’ (1929), ‘Soon’ (1929), ‘Embraceable You’ (1930), ‘But Not for Me’ (1930), ‘I've Got a Crush on You’ (1930), ‘I Got Rhythm’ (1930), ‘Who Cares? (So Long As You Care for Me)’ (1931), ‘It Ain't Necessarily So’ (1935), ‘Let's Call the Whole Thing Off’ (1936), ‘They All Laughed’ (1936), ‘They Can't Take That Away from Me’ (1937), ‘A Foggy Day’ (1937), ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ (1937), ‘Love Walked In’ (1937), and ‘Love Is Here to Stay’ (1938).
