Origin of the song
On 19 September 1952, the War melodrama One Minute to Zero, produced by RKO Radio Pictures, directed by Tay Garnett and starring Robert Mitchum, Ann Blyth, William Talman and Charles McGraw, premiered in the US. In the film's soundtrack, 'When I Fall in Love' sounded like an instrumental track. A few months before the premiere, singer Jeri Southern, accompanied by Victor Young's orchestra, had recorded the song for Decca label.
Victor Young and Edward Heyman had previously collaborated in 'Love Letters', a song belonging to the film Love Letters (1945). Later, in 1955, they wrote 'Blue Star', the theme of the TV series Medic.
Victor Young began his career as a classical composer and violin concert pianist, but decided to devote himself to popular music after playing in Isham Jones' orchestra. In the 1930s he moved to Hollywood where he composed the soundtracks for such famous films as Golden Boy (1939), For Whom the Bells Tolls (1943), Samson and Delilah (1949), The Quiet Man (1942), Scaramouche (1952), Something to Live For (1952), Something to Live For (1952), Shane (1953), and Written on the Wind (1956). He was nominated twenty-two times for the Oscar for his work in film, receiving four nominations in the same year on two occasions, but did not live to see any awards. When he won his only Oscar for the soundtrack of Around the World In Eighty Days (1956), he had already passed away.
